Kitchen care guide - different materials require individual care

When buying a new kitchen, you should bear in mind that different materials also require very different care. In general, the following applies to all kitchen fronts: use a gentle cleaner and then wipe dry carefully.

The fronts of your kitchen are an eye-catcher and can be easily cleaned with water-soluble household cleaning products, regardless of whether they are made of foil or plastic, wood or lacquer. However, you should always avoid abrasive, aggressive products, sponges and coarse, abrasive cloths. If you are not sure about compatibility, experts from the Varia kitchen studio recommend a small test on an inconspicuous area. Please note that high-gloss and lacquered fronts must not be cleaned dry. The use of abrasive cleaning aids (microfiber cloths, scouring pads, etc.) can lead to increased scratch formation Attention: If your kitchen has wooden fronts, it is important to wipe in the direction of the wood fibres when cleaning.

Cleaning different worktops

Worktops made of laminate require particularly regular care. Almost all household cleaners that do not contain abrasive/abrasive particles are suitable for this purpose. Waxy or greasy polishes, strongly acidic salts and acidic cleaners can also damage or change the surface structure of a plastic worktop.

Warm water is ideal for cleaning, as using cold water can leave ugly discoloration and streaks. In particular, chamois leather, previously used cloths and steel wool are taboo - soft cloths or sponges are ideal. Paper towels are particularly suitable for drying the laminate panels.

As a general rule in the kitchen: do not place hot pots/pans or baking trays on worktops; coasters should always be used. The experts at the Varia kitchen studio also recommend avoiding cutting directly on plastic worktops, as this causes unsightly scratches. Cutting boards or a built-in cutting mat are the better choice.

Granite, natural stone and wooden worktops

Natural stone worktops have open pores and are therefore highly absorbent. Without special care, stains can occur and, above all, dirt can penetrate. According to experts from the Varia kitchen studio, a special impregnation with oil and water-repellent products should be carried out every one to two years. After treatment, the stone worktop can no longer absorb liquid dirt. It can simply be wiped off.

Solid/natural wood worktops are natural and vibrant. However, moisture, which cannot be avoided in your kitchen, causes the material to work more. For this reason, wet sponges and damp cloths should not be left there for long periods of time. After cleaning, the wooden worktop must be dried immediately. To protect your real wood worktop against stains and water, a wax-based product is suitable.
