Countertops made of quartz composite, ceramic, and natural stone

When planning a kitchen, one is fortunate to be able to tailor everything exactly to one's needs. Tastes vary, and demands on a kitchen differ depending on one's life situation. From functionality to ergonomic features and durability, this extends to color schemes as well.

The countertop is a central point in everything. How wide should it be to accommodate all tasks smoothly? At what height should it be installed to ensure ergonomic comfort? Which material best suits the intended use?

Today, we're introducing three materials along with their characteristics: natural stone, quartz composite, and ceramic.

Natural stone

Here comes a natural product! Each piece is unique with a one-of-a-kind design, just as nature created it, and no industrial production is required.
Natural stone is also suitable for working; it is largely scratch and cut resistant. Like stone, it is completely waterproof, durable, and has excellent hygiene properties.

Compared to industrially produced slabs, natural stone slabs are relatively expensive. Also, in terms of maintenance, the material is somewhat more elaborate: it is susceptible to acids and should only be cleaned with mild detergents. Furthermore, it should be regularly impregnated. Last but not least: Stone has a high weight, which can make planning somewhat more difficult.

Quartz compsoite

Quartz is one of the hardest substances after diamond. By combining it with special resin, dyes, and glass chips, quartz composite is created.

The material has high mechanical resistance and is extremely resistant to stains. Since the material always needs to be polished, it is available in glossy or matte finishes. You have a lot of flexibility in color choice; you can add shimmering elements or use even tones like pure white.

However, if the countertop is expected to withstand high heat, the material reaches its limits. It's better to place hot pots on a trivet.

Ceramic

What began thousands of years ago with fragile clay pots has evolved into a high-strength and durable high-tech composite used not only in dentistry but also for brake discs. When used as a countertop, it impresses most people with its elegant appearance.

Ceramic has excellent hygiene properties and is easy to maintain. Due to its manufacturing process at high temperatures, the material is resistant to cutting and extremely heat-resistant. Ceramic is also resistant to acids and doesn't even need to be impregnated for protection. Available in all colors and as a solid cast, the material actually leaves little to be desired. Or does it?

Indeed, there are two minor limitations: since the slab must be fired in one piece in an oven, there is a limit of 3 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width. Beyond that, a visible seam will appear. Furthermore, the material is very high-priced. Due to its complex manufacturing process, we are indeed in the highest price segment here.
